Yeah, UHaul sucks. I've rented from them several times, and they always try to charge me for an extra day because I drop the truck off after hours, and I have to call and fight with a rep to get the charge taken off.

On the plus side, most of their trucks are so beat up that you can cause a lot of damage before they care, especially if it already has a few dozen of those little damage-marking stickers on it.

I absolutely agree with your assessment. When we were planning our move from UT to CA 4 years ago, we found out that 2 people in our circle of friends had experienced breakdowns in U-Haul trucks while in the middle of the move. In each case, customer service had been really bad, they waited for hours on the side of the freeway in the summer heat, and ended up having to do a lot of extra lifting. We figured that anyone could have a bad experience, but 2 people--in the past 2 years--that's more than just a coincidence.

After deciding on Penske, we reserved a 22-footer, but when we got there, all they had was a 26-footer. A little bit harder to manage, but it worked okay. The truck was relatively new, looked great, drove well, and it gave us absolutely no trouble. We got about 12-13 miles/gallon in it, which isn't much worse than a lot of big sedans out there.

On a long-distance move, it's not worth risking a breakdown to save a few bucks. I'd go with Penske again in a heartbeat.
