On a side note… Virginias Department of Motor Vehicles is Bad. I know almost all are bad, but they are (IMHO) the worst I’ve ever seen. They once suspended my license for not having insurance (which I did), and didn’t notify me. I didn’t find out until I was pulled over for a minor violation and the police officer notified me. Which was terrible because I had to find a ride home and couldn’t drive until I jumped through more hoops and paid a $500 re-instatement fee. When this happened, I told some co-workers, and found out that 2 of them had the same thing happen. AND, my wife’s best friend just had the same thing happen to her. I know it sounds crazy, 4 seperate people. Each of us weren’t notified until we were pulled over or went to the DMV, and all of us had to fork out the $500 re-reinstatement fee. There is an appeal process but since none of us were notified till after the fact the window for appealing had closed. . As another example of bad pracitce: 2 years ago they instituted “Civil Penalties” for VA residents that violated traffic laws. All of the fines were mandatory. (Meaning a judge could not waive them). They ranged from a few hundred dollars payable over 3 years for speeding, to a whopping $2500 for wreckless driving. Fortunately, someone took the state to court, and these laws were dropped after a few months.
Dude, I had the same thing happen to me! Suckage.
OK-Here’s how stupid Virginia DMV is (I know, this could be a long list:
When you go in for a personalized plate and they “pass” something dicey that you want on the plate-they even issue the plate to you. Then someone complains-they want to recall it and will actually take it off of your car (if they can find it).
In other words, it’s your fault that they issued the plate.
Oh yeah another thing. They act like they are so tough on issuing licenses (remember it was VA DMV’s fault that the 9-11 terrorists got VA drivers licenses). So they go through this proof of residence BS.
Two-big fat loopholes you can exploit:
1. They will take a completely un notorized renters lease as proof
2. If you can convince a Manager that your documents are real, there is something called Managers Discretion”-What This means is that if you can fool the manager, she can wave the legal requirement.
